This house spreads over the basement, ground and first floor and shows how small redundant sites can be used to provide high-quality sustainable design for residential use.

Originally this land was the rear garden of an end terrace house and then converted into a storage/shed/garage. Although this house sits lower and sets back from the adjacent terrace house, it does not borrow alignments from it, rather, it is simple in form and decoration, hinting at its industrial past and providing a contemporary contrast to the terrace.

A fundamental aspect of the design was introducing a green roof, a green wall and a landscaped garden to enable nature to propagate and reclaim part of our urban environment.

We introduced a series of openings that could enable inhabitants to contemplate, connect and understand these new natural spaces, which are constantly evolving.

This house was built by its owners and although this caused a longer building timeframe, it also created a more acute sense of ownership and connection to the neighbourhood.
